Virtual Prayer Walk
This virtual prayer walk follows the same path as the physical scripture walk, passing by a series of granite boulders, that stand at the front of the Carey Centre on the UBC campus.
HISTORY OF THE PRAYER WALK
Each of these boulders were pulled from the excavation site for the current Carey building, which was completed in 2005. The twelve stones have been placed alongside a cement block pathway. Each has been inscribed with a scripture text, which calls us to direct our attention toward the living God.
In early 2005 Carey faculty members were asked to submit a passage, or two, of scripture that were personally significant to each of them and might be beneficial to others for the purpose of meditation. There were a number of duplicte passages submitted, and these were immediately included as part of the flow. The scripture verses were then cast onto bronze plaques, and each one was attached to a separate boulder.
The scripture stones alternate from left to right, and each inscription faces the walkway, allowing for a time of meditation before moving a few steps to the next stones. Beginning with the Great Shema, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one” through “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” to “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.” The meditative walk focuses our attention on our relationship with God as articulated through twelve passages of Holy Scripture.
May you find this walk a blessing. If you visit us at Carey, please feel free to walk the path at any time.
